Life's Not Fair!Have you ever heard kids talking about a situation that doesn't work out the way they want? "It's not fair!" they scream. Inevitably parents shout back, "Life's not fair!" Well, I beg to differ. I think it's a whole lot more fair than most of us dream. So many people think that justice is all about getting their way. And when they don't, they cry foul. Injustice. Lack of fairness. Bias. Or whatever. Believe me, all those things are possible, but blaming the things we don't like in our lives on them abdicates responsibility for how we perceive those situations, as well as the choices we made to get into them. Whether it's in business or elsewhere in life, we're always doing a balancing act between others and us. It seems life is a zero sum game, and someone's got to lose. That puts us in a lose-lose situation, at least if we care about things working out for the benefit of all. I believe every situation serves us, even the ones we seem to lose. And if we're served, justice is done. The question is, how do we find the value offered us? The way I do it is to clear my mind and ask that very question. "How does this serve me?" And often the answer will come, if not immediately then soon. Probably just as important is how can we make the best of a bad situation. Life doesn't end when things don't work out in our favor. It goes on, and so must we. The trick is picking yourself up, figuring out how to keep from getting knocked down again, and then getting back on our horse and setting off to get where we want to go. So if your life doesn't seem so fair, take a moment to consider that maybe it's working out better this way than the way you wanted. Find the value in the moment. Then raise your vision toward your objective and get on with your effort to get there. By john dennison at 11/13/2007 - 3:13pm | john dennison's blog | login to post comments
