Taking Things for GrantedHave you ever stopped to take stock of what you're doing and where you're going? I do, perhaps more often than makes me comfortable. And to be honest, it often makes me wonder. Like I thought that nearly 30 years in the law would make me feel like the consummate insider, knowing how things work and all. But for all the know-how in getting things done I've developed, it hasn't been like that at all. To be honest, I've neglected my practice. I haven't treated it well these last few years as I took time off to write books and speak and try to get others to see things in a new way so they could create lives that worked a little better. Yet for all my neglect, it still loves me, and brings me people to help. And when I do, it makes me feel like I matter. I took it for granted, and even wanted out from time-to-time, to experience the excitement of something new. But it always loved me, fed me, and took care of me, even when I was too distracted to take care of myself. If you find yourself giving part of your life less than your all, maybe you'll learn a little quicker than I did to appreciate what you've got. Not only to cherish it, but nurture it and let it grow. It's brought me back into a new appreciation of this sometimes exhiliarating but often frustrating business that keeps me on my toes in so many ways. I've learned that saving the world starts at home, saving the things I consider important. My family is important. My clients are important. And so is this business that has brought me in contact with so many wonderful people over these 30 years. So, as I move forward, I remember what I have. And look for ways to build upon it, not discard it as a relic of the past. To do this, Laura and I are expanding into new areas around the country, working with co-counsel where we aren't currently barred. Doing our best to help you make a difference in your life, and in our world. I hope you will take a moment to remember the things in your life are important. Cherish them. And stop to give them thanks. Even inanimate ones like the work you do that serves to create the experiences of your life. And allow you to know yourself a little better.
