Calling it Like You See ItAs a lawyer with over 25 years experience in the criminal and civil courts, I have vigorously represented my clients interests whether the client was the State of Ohio in a criminal prosecution, or a business seeking q remedy or damages in a civil case or a spouse seeking a divorce in a Florida Family Courts. Prosecution and litigation usually brought out the worst behavior in people. I"ll never forget a criminal case where I was told by the defense, that I was prosecuting two innocent men for rape by two teenage girls. I knew in my heart that my clients were lying. All I had to do was to convince my bosses to drop the charges. This was no easy task. In fact when presenting their cases to my superior, I was told to try the case. I believed at the time that they thought I was trying to ease my workload as I was pregnant. After I put forth my case to the jury, the defense gave me a handwritten note from one of my alleged victims. The note spoke of love for one of the defendants. Since this evidence was not diclosed before trial, the court gave me some time to have the handwriteen note analyzed by a handwriting expert. After handwrinting samples were provided by my own witnesses, I presented them to a handwriting expert to determine whether or not the note had been written by one of the alleged victims. The expert determined that the note had been written one of the teenage girls. With that information, I asked the girls for the truth. They fessed up. They said they had made the story up because they had stayed out all night with the defendants. At that point, I knew I could no longer go forward with a case based on lies. I went to the Chief Prosecutor in my office and he authorized the dismissal of the case. By laura dennison at 02/16/2007 - 5:11pm | Social Justice | laura dennison's blog | login to post comments
