The Case for a Shift in How We Approach LifeAuthor's Note: This is a living document. It evolves as the case is built for a radical shift in how we approach life. I invite you to check back regularly.) Our world’s a mess. So are many of our lives. Conflict. Struggle. Oppression. Problematic situations everywhere. The old ways of dealing with them aren’t working. In fact, they’re bringing more of the same, only worse, as technology and science magnify their impact. Isn’t it time we try new approaches, new ideas? But to find and consider them takes a shift in perspective and belief, so that we aren’t distorting and discarding new possibilities before they ever get a chance for consideration. What are we getting? And why? Conflicts of will. Struggles to survive. Injustice fueled by those who control society’s systems and institutions, wielded in favor of those with money and influence who pull the strings. All wrapped up in commercialism and greed to get what we can, leaving some at the disadvantage of those who play the system well, or stack the chips in their favor, at the expense of those who don’t. Where are our institutions? Education fails to compete with the call of hedonistic pursuits, games, and sexual fantasies. Religions are hanging on for dear life, some fighting back with fundamentalist or evangelical movements. New ones are sprouting up that refuse to accept or abide by all the old teachings, or the interpretations handed down through the years. Technology and jobs are flowing to countries with cheap but educated labor forces that can attract capital investment. Why? We're taught it’s right to pursue our desires and avoid our fears, even when that leads us into conflict with others. Yet such a course of action does little for our world, putting us in a constant state of competition. Darwin was right. It’s survival of the fittest. Or at least, those are the rules humanity has lived by. Where the winner takes the spoils, and the loser is relegated to the scrap-heap of obscurity. What if life weren’t that way at all? What if we were simply playing by the wrong set of rules? And that by adopting a new set, we could better deal with life's struggles while creating the lives that we crave, and a better world to live them in? What if there were another way? Sure, life’s dealt many of us a tough hand. It's hard to raise our vision toward something better when we're caught in the quagmire of life. But that mess resulted from rules based on self-interest, urging us to get-while-the-getting's-good. That may work for some, at least for a while. But in the long run, it’s like trying to put the round peg into the square hole. Because many of us just don’t fit into their way of doing things. The problem is, we’ve conceded the field of battle to those who gravitate toward keeping things the way they are. We've allowed them to seize our institutions and systems of governance. We’ve let them design and run our system of commerce. And we’ve bought into all the beliefs that keep it in place. Including the idea that we're left with no choice but to live lives that leave us wanting, suffering, and struggling to get by. To consider how we might construct another way takes a shift in perspective, along with a shift in willingness to explore what else life can be. Spiritual Justice Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that all men were born with certain inalienable rights. And that among them are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Inalienable means that they can’t be taken away from us. Nor can we give them away, no matter how much we are enticed to do so. Yet we and others desparately try to take them away from each other, or give them up to those who buy our favor. Behind these core principles of the Declaration is a fundamental truth of reality – that every soul is created equal. Each comes into this world to gather the experiences it needs (for whatever reason). And it has the right to get them. That right comes with a heavy responsibility to allow every other souls to do the same. And to do them no harm as we go about our business. This principle I call Spiritual Justice. It is embodied in the right of self-determination. A right that few of us truly recognize, much less practice, in our relationshps as we fight to impose our wills upon each other. We fight to get ours, and if someone else gets in the way, oh, well. One of us loses. So in the pursuit of liberty and happiness, we make sure it’s the other guy. The resulting focus on self-interest and conflict of wills is behind most of the conflict, oppression, and deprivation in our world. Now the problems have grown so great that our selfish, combative ways jeopardize the chance for future generations of souls to attend school in this incubator of creative exploration. There Must be a Way Out of this Mess If we’re to find our way out of this mess, we must first address this “human nature” and find a way to reconcile it with the rights of the soul to get whatever experiences it came for. Maybe some souls still want to struggle and suffer. That’s been going on for so long that they probably don't know there's any other way. But in the interests of a better future for all, it's time those who've discovered one let them in on the secret. So everyone has the choice to do something different with their opportunity of life. And break the cycle of suffering that's gripped mankind for so long. It's really not a secret at all. It's something we all know but refuse to admit or give a moment's throught. And that's the fact that life isn't a haphazard event. Instead, it is an organized collection of experiences gathered in a vast system of interactive reality. One in which we each are dropped. With no instructions. No rule book. With no idea of what is possible. Or not. Instead, we’re trained in a body of knowledge and beliefs set down by earlier generations who didn't know any better. All to put us on the “same page,” so to speak, and get us to play by the same set of rules as they did. So we can get along and go along with the status quo. Yet that status quo keeps in place the approaches and disparity that makes it difficult for most to create the lives they want to live. Sure, they can get a little of what they're hoping for. But most of the time it’s about learning to live with disappointment and accepting less than what we want. Shifting Perspectives We can start to change that status quo simply by shifting perspective and beginning to see our world as an incubator where souls come to learn to wield the powers at their disposal. And in doing so, create the experiences they desire. Along the way, they explore what those powers are, what is possible, and how the entire process of life can be used to help them know a little better who they are and what they’re really all about. Now, this shift doesn’t require us to give up any of the common beliefs we have, especially about religion. For we can still believe in a God, and all the rules that have been set down along the way. Some beliefs may serve us better than others, depending upon what we’re trying to create for ourselves, especially as may be necessary to meet the circumstances into which we are born. That's why the diversity of cultures and beliefs is such a wonderful thing -- it allows everyone to get the experiences they came for. The issue isn’t which culture or set of beliefs is right. Or even which perspective. Only that every soul is allowed to discover and practice its powers of creation. And through that process constructing a life that reflects its creative efforts. This is nothing new. We've all been doing it for years, and our ancestors for milennia. However, the way we've practiced is by exerting effort and activity in the physical world, and imposing our wills upon the people around us when they stand in our way. Certainly learning to create through hard work is essential for all of our growth. But doing it at the expense of another is detrimental to the world we want to create, and runs contrary to right of self-determination. In order to create a just new world, one way might be to squash human nature and require everyone to bow down to the greater good. But a better way would be to address the reasons underlying the assertion of our wills, and examine where the needs of the self deviate from those of the many. That way lies beneath the surface of life, where the ego forms its identity and images of self, and creates the motivation to assert its will upon others. This takes us into the world of energy. A Matter of Energy. It's no secret that we live in a world of energy, at least in our view of the outer world. That scientific principle has been widely accepted since Einstein and his famous equation E=mc2. It calculates the amount of energy stored within a fixed amount of matter based on a function of its mass times the square of the speed of light. In other words, even in the smallest amount of matter there’s a tremendous amount of energy at work hold together this three-dimensional world in which we live. Energy is applied in many forms besides holding together the matter of our outer world. Physical activity. Light Electricity. Magnetism. Gravity. Chemical reactions. I’m sure you can think of a lot more. There are probably many other forms that none of us know about. Or ever will. Civilization reflects mankind’s increasing ability to identify and manipulate those energies through communications, medicine, computers, robotics, and all the many wonders of the modern world. What science hasn't discovered yet is what's going on inside us, where more subtle energies are at work. For there inside is where life is filtered, processed, and created, and we learn to act as the creators-in-training that we are. Understanding these energies is necessry if we are to take the next step in our common evolution. These are the energies of the ego, those which act upon it, and those upon which it draws to construct our reality. Some of those energies are thoughts and emotions. Others are absorbed from our environment. Still more flow to us from a spiritual source. These are constantly working beneath the surface of our attention to create the lives we live. Yet most of the time they go unnoticed, completely beyond the realm of our awareness. Yet these energies are often misapplied by us, and used to create inner obstacles and other hidden factors that interfere with our ability to create the lives we crave and support the twisted outer reality that we seek to change. If souls are to go their own ways without conflict or harm to others, we must learn to address these factors and the obstacles they erect. What sort of obstacles? Obstacles like false images. Fears. Misconceptions. Excess preoccupation with self. Desires. Protective barriers. Response patterns. Personality characteristics. And a whole lot more. Until these inner conditions are identified and addressed, and as well we learn to use the subtle energies to work for us rather than against us, it’s difficult to see how human beings can relate to each other any better than we do now, much less make life all that it can be. Finding Your Vision Yet there is always hope and strength to make this effort. For within each of us is a source of life that is trying to be expressed through the lives we create. It fills us with skills, passions, personalities, creativity, intuition, and other things that we can draw on. But too often we deal with life by subordinating those gifts to the beliefs and rules of the rest of the outer world, and the way we think it works. So traveling the inner way requires we learn to set them aside, and consider what else may hide beneath the surface. That "else" is a vision of the life our souls came to live, and the way the world needs to be in order for us to live it. As children our naiveté makes us think anything is possible. But then the harsh reality of school, work, and building a family sets in. Our visions fade, and the lives we end up with are often but shells of what we once wanted. Is it any wonder we live lives of discontent? Yet no matter how far we stray from the soul's chosen path, that vision remains. Our job is to find it, and build our lives around it. And gather the experiences it brings as we go about that effort to manifest it in our world. But how can we do this? Creating a Space First we must create a space in our outer affairs, and begin the inner journey to uncover and dissolve the inner obstacles that keep us from creating lives that work with the gifts we've been given. That space cannot be created through more of the same. It requires we learn to more efficiently direct the energies that make things the way they are. And in the process, bring us more peace, happiness, and even prosperity into our lives, expanding ourselves, our self-knowing, and our power to create in the process. Creating that space often requires we shift how we approach life and deal with our outer affairs. It may mean developing our inner visions into missions that impact others, or even the world. Or it may simply mean seeing and going about life a little differently. It also means learning to hear and follow the voice that whispers to each of us within. For that voice is our connection to the source of life, and the manner in which the creator communicates with the reality of its creation, and all found within it. The Possibility of Ascension It probably doesn't take much to make a case for improving the interaction of human beings. Nevertheless, lurking in the background of this suggestion for radical transformation of the human experience is a possible future event known as the Ascension. Many cultures and religions have long taught about the end times. The Mayan perpetual calendar ends in 2012. The Kabballah is already counting down the end of time. The Christians long for a Golden Age after Armageddon and the return of the Christ. And so on. The question to most is not whether it will happen, but when and what will it look like. This is a question I will beg, for truly, I know no more than you. What I do know, though, is that if there is to be a rebirth of humanity to live in these times, it must be accompanied by some sort of shift that sets aside the contests of will and desire that have contributed to so many horrors over the centuries. Moreover, if there truly is to be a return of the masters, or of the Christ, then certainly it stands to reason that return will be to herald an expansion of human capability to leapfrog its old problems and lay a foundation for a new beginning. That beginning, I suggest, is based upon the evolutionary journey of the soul that comes into this world to learn about itself as it learns to wield the energies of creation. First in the physical world, then the emotional and mental, and finally moving inward to the spiritual, that soul grows through its ever-expanding ability to express itself and interact with the life of its creation. And discovering its relationship to the rest of creation in the process. With that discovery comes an increasing ability to harness the energies of the inner world, and use them to reshape our response mechanisms in dealing with the outer one. Such ability will naturally transform relations between human beings away from one of contest to one more of self-expression through individual and group creativity. This, to me, would usher in a golden age for mankind, and lay the groundwork for the Ascension in whatever form it may occur (or perhaps vice versa, if the Ascension lays the groundwork for this transformation). But then, if we were to make such evolutionary (and involutionary) strides, perhaps that by definition might be an ascension in and of itself, as we ascend beyond the muck and mire of our egoic ways to reflect the mastery that we harbor inside. What We Are Doing Through the eJustice Network, as well as our other ventures at MissionLaunch, WhisperZone, and PeaceOptions, we are assembling teams of awakening servers to help you create the space needed to deal with the troubling situations of your life, and help you to awaken to the possibilities of the inner path. Some will have professional skills to deal with and resolve conflicts or help you restructure your affairs so you can have more peace of mind and room to breathe. Others will be spiritual teachers who will help you hear the whispers of your soul and make your inner journey so you can know your own way through life, and expand your means of expression, creativity, and even service. Still more will address the difficult conditions of the outer world and engage those who would crush those who refuse to travel the same old primrose path. They will speak what you do not yet hear, or have the words to say for yourself. And to keep you aware we're all in this together, we're inviting into community all who seek to express their inner mastery so they can connect and interact with others as they build new approaches to life. Drawing on each other for strength, support, insights and perspectives, and learning from their experiences along the way. What's Our Choice? Does humanity really have a choice? We can keep on going the way we’re going, beating each other up fighting for our piece of the pie. And leading our world a little closer to the eve of our destruction. Or we can shift into a new way of relating to each other and life itself. Where we see each other as cooperative co-creators of the experiences we each came for, and work together to create the ones we want, rather than more of the same that we don't. We can continue to struggle and fight. Or we can recognize the God-given right of every soul to do what it came for, free of interference or imposition of its will on others. And in so doing, create more of what we crave inside. This only comes by making the inner journey and doing justice for the soul. Will you do justice for yours?
