Women and Heart Disease

Its been all over the news, on Oprah, on CNN, and on the Internet that heart disease is the leading cause of death of American Woman. I never would have believed that and always thought that cancer was the leading cause of death in women.

Well, I learned about heart disease for myself late last year. Last November, my doctor told me that I had high cholesterol. He told me that I could start taking niacin, niacin and a statin drug or I could begin an exercise program (walking everyday for at least 30 minutes) while taking plant sterol supplements. I chose the latter. Earlier last year, we had joined a health club but I rarely went. So I decided in earnest to walk.

I modified what my doctor told me. I did not go everyday to the health club. But I did go 3-4 times a week and walked on a vertical climber for 30 minutes and biked for another 30 minutes. Somedays, I just did the vertical climber for 45 minutes and worked on the weight machines for 15 minutes. While I was on the machines, I meditated and envisioned all the little particles of cholesterol leaving my body.

We have a doctor friend, Terry Friedman, who told me while we were visiting him and other friends in Phoenix, Arizona that same month, that I should start taking red yeast rice. When I returned home, I went on the internet and did my research. At around the same time, I saw an advertisement for a Bottom Line Publication. It provided information on supplements that could help with various ailments, so I purchased a book from them and learned about red yeast rice and other supplements that could lower my cholesterol. I also spoke to my sister, Cindy, who is a doctor. She confirmed that red yeast rice could be used instead of statins and niacin to lower cholesterol.

In four months, I have lowered my total cholesterol by over 60 points! I consider it a miracle. I didn't do this by myself. I want to thank my doctors and the man upstairs for their advice and help with this miracle.

American Women take time for your health. You can't help anyone else if yo don't take care of yourself first. Go see your doctor at the very minimum for an annual checkup. My husband and I get our cholesterol checked 3-4 times per year with a simple blood test that is ordered by our doctor. Even though I chose not to take statin drugs because of the possibility of damage to my liver, I chose an alternative presented to me by my doctor and modified it to something I could live with. Be proactive with your health. Remember you come first, not last.
